Mahler’s Titan
Saturday, May 16, 2026, 7:30 pm
This thrilling finale to our classical season kicks off with a dynamic overture by the incredibly talented Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz, whose bold and vibrant symphonic work made waves at a time when few women composers were breaking through. Known for her violin-centric compositions, this overture showcases her exceptional skill and is a stunning tour-de-force for the entire orchestra.
Next, prepare to be dazzled by Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1, one of the most challenging solo works in the Romantic style. The brilliant guest horn soloist Erik Ralske, principal horn for the Metropolitan Opera, will take center stage and undoubtedly leave the audience in awe with his virtuosity and expressive performance. The grand finale of the evening is Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, also known as “Titan.” This monumental piece opens with a breathtaking string section that spans seven octaves, setting the stage for a symphonic journey of unparalleled depth. With evocative bird calls from the woodwinds, Mahler’s Titan bursts with youthful exuberance, then shifts into haunting moments of melancholy and introspection, making it an emotional rollercoaster you won't want to miss.
